The building biology of a Massiv-Holz-Mauer® house

The aim of building biology is to achieve healthy, sustainable building and living that allows people to exist in harmony with their built environment as well as buildings that are designed to be environmentally friendly and produce minimal pollutants.

The Massiv-Holz-Mauer® consists of untreated timber through and through. Here, there is no need for impermeable foils inside the building that produce unnecessary waste. With the MHM wall, you won’t even have to ask how harmful glue is to health as it is manufactured entirely without glue. Bucking the trend in the construction sector towards the ever-increasing use of adhesives, the MHM construction method helps to significantly reduce the amount of glue and adhesives used in the building.

Thanks to the solid timber construction and the special nails (electrically conductive but not magnetic), the Massiv-Holz-Mauer® absorbs and reflects part of the high-frequency radiation from the outside (caused by the mobile phone network, for example), which can have a positive impact on your health. For all “non-wall elements” such as roof structures and windows, we recommend additional measures to achieve a similar protective effect as for the MHM wall.

The Earth has a natural constant magnetic field. This is an important order and orientation factor for all living things. It is known from the research done into ecological aspects of construction that our organism can react negatively to technical or artificially generated constant magnetic fields. In buildings, this is usually triggered by magnetised steel elements, which act as permanent magnets. The use of non-magnetic profiled aluminium nails in the MHM wall causes less disruption to the natural magnetic field of the Earth. This can have a positive effect on you and your health.

The Massiv-Holz-Mauer® is a natural building material and behaves ideally by nature – for a lifetime. An important point to consider is the hygroscopic property of the MHM wall and the inside lining, which ensures that moisture from the living space is absorbed and given off again until a moisture balance is achieved. The natural, vapour-permeable construction, comprising many individual board layers without an internal vapour control layer, allows the Massiv-Holz-Mauer® to contribute to the existing indoor air humidity in an uncomplicated and natural way in all seasons.

Using the Massiv-Holz-Mauer® can reduce the impact on the environment in several ways. The natural insulating properties of the wood are even further optimised by the grooves of the MHM boards. The wall core of an MHM building thus makes up a substantial part of the thermal insulation and contributes to minimised energy consumption.

Thanks to the regional and efficient manufacturing of the Massiv-Holz-Mauer®, the CO2 emissions resulting from manufacturing and delivery remain very low. Importantly, as a solid timber construction, the Massiv-Holz-Mauer® offers the long-term storage of large quantities of CO2 over the decades-long life cycle of a building.

At the end of its life cycle, the Massiv-Holz-Mauer® can be completely reused: where appropriate, the wood is released for environmentally friendly energy generation and the nails are used for the energy-saving production of recycled aluminium.
